The symbol that best represents the Celtic spirit is unquestionably the circle. The ultimate symmetry, the perfect balance, the path that always returns to its beginnings; The Great Wheel, the endless cycle by which life gives rise to new life.

CHASE depicts a classic symbol of the circular nature of life: the dog and cat in endless pursuit. One of the most ancient artistic motifs is an animal chasing its prey, as seen from cave paintings to the frescoes of the High Renaissance. The dog has long been the symbol of fidelity and as a hunting companion usually associated with the male.  The cat has traditionally represented the female aspect since Egyptian times, when she was revered as Bast, the goddess of the home. In medieval Celtic monasteries, cats were kept by the monks as both pets and mouse-catchers to protect their owners' grain.

CHASE, being a circular work, has no “right” orientation…it can be viewed in any position. The artist’s preference is indicated by the fact that he has signed and numbered each print twice, above and below. So that cat lovers and dog lovers might have their choice, CHASE can be hung with either animal’s head at the top.

CHASE was executed in gouache paint on calfskin manuscript vellum, using goose quill pens and extremely fine detail brushes. Available as a fine art giclee printed at actual size in a limited edition of 300, the artwork is professionally converted into a digital image to exactly match the original vellum page. Each individual print is inspected and then hand numbered and signed by the artist. They are accompanied by a description and a signed certificate of authenticity. The giclees are printed on heavyweight 100% cotton archival paper using highly lightfast pigmented inks rated to last 80 to 100 years.
