Author unknown; circa 17th century-

Anocht is uaigneach Éire,
do-bheir fógra a fir-fhréimhe
gruiadhe a fear’s a fionn-bhan flioch;
treabh is iongnadh go huaignioch.

Translation from the Irish-
Ireland is lonely tonight,
the banishment of her true people
makes men and women weep;
strange that such a home
should be so desolate.

This poignant Gaelic poem, which still speaks powerfully to us after more than three hundred years, beautifully captures the anguish of the exiled and of the Irish experience. Though penned in the 17th century, this mournful lament foreshadows the tragedy of the Great Famine two centuries later. EXILE is an early work by Michael Carroll and was intended to have the look and feel of a page from the Lindisfarne Gospels, which while not as intricate as the Book of Kells, is generally more brilliant in hue, and makes greater use of primary colors. The delicate webs of red-dot interlacing are a hallmark of the Lindisfarne style, as is the traditional device of treating the outer border as a lion’s body, its own tail clenched in its teeth. Each knotwork panels contains a continuous unbroken line, and the pattern itself is typical of Lindisfarne.

EXILE is reproduced in lithograph at actual size; printed on 100% acid-free heavyweight paper using the finest inks, and hand-signed and numbered by the artist. Accompanying each print is a signed certificate of authenticity, and full description of the artwork. In order to insure the value of each print, the plates have been destroyed and EXILE will never again be released in further editions.
